Advocacy in workers’ comp is a documentation discipline
There is a version of legal advocacy that happens in a hearing room. In workers’ compensation, much of the real advocacy happens long before you get there.
What actually decides a claim is whether someone sat down with every page of a worker’s medical history and built an accurate account of what happened to their body. Which conditions the insurer accepted. Which ones the worker was actually treated for. What each provider billed, under which code, on which date. What was requested and denied, and by whom, and when.
That account either exists or it doesn’t. If it doesn’t, the client’s award reflects a version of their injury that is smaller than the real one, and nobody in the process is obligated to notice.
Building it falls to the paralegal. At We Care Legal, that means head paralegal Haley Hammond.
The records pile
Records arrive without organization, and there is no version of this work where they don’t.
“We are going to get buried in paperwork and that paperwork is not organized in any way, shape or form. There’s no portal to where it’s perfectly organized. I’m having to dig for dates of service that don’t match upload dates. It’s all over the place.”
Haley Hammond · Lead paralegal, We Care Legal
Every provider names things differently. Service dates don’t match upload dates. A single claim can run to thousands of pages across any number of providers. Somewhere in all of that is the sentence that matters: a physician mentioning radiating pain into the shoulder, four months before anyone thought to add the shoulder to the claim.
There is no shortcut through all of that. Miss what matters, and you leave value on the table for the case and for your client.
“Before FasterOutcomes, it was all me, all manual.”

The paralegal is also the attorney’s preparation
A workers’ comp attorney walks into a deposition, a mediation, or a hearing carrying what the paralegal built. The chronology, the treatment history, the denials, the inconsistencies in the insurer’s own file — all of it is assembled before the attorney needs it, and the quality of that assembly sets the ceiling on what the attorney can do with it.
This is the part of the work that is easiest to underestimate from outside the firm. The attorney makes the argument. The paralegal makes the argument possible, and does it under deadline, across every open file at once.
What changed, precisely
Before FasterOutcomes, the mechanical part of that assembly used to take days. Pulling every mention of a condition out of two thousand pages. Cross-referencing billing codes against treatment notes. Reconstructing what was approved and what was refused, in order. Real work, done carefully, that consumed real days.
That specific task now takes moments.
FasterOutcomes runs the firm’s Playbooks — built-in workflows that extract and analyze the full record before anyone opens it, and return the file already sorted into the questions a comp paralegal needs answered.
Which conditions the worker has actually been treated for, rather than which ones the claim officially covers
Which treatments the insurer refused to approve
What each provider billed for, and under which codes
None of that is new information. It was always in the file. What changed is that finding it is no longer the thing that eats the week.
The analysis that follows takes as long as it has always taken. It should. That part is the job.
What Haley does with FasterOutcomes to review and act
A permanent impairment rating came back at 3%.
Haley read it against the AMA Guides — the reference physicians use to convert an injury into an impairment percentage — and concluded the correct figure was closer to 17%. She took it back to the treating doctor and made the case. He agreed.
“It should actually be 17% based off of this versus three, which is a difference of potentially $20,000 to $30,000.”
Haley Hammond · Lead paralegal, We Care Legal
Fourteen percentage points, on a single rating, for one client.
It is worth being exact about how that happened. No software rated that injury and no software sat across from a physician and argued the point until he revised it. That was a paralegal with years of workers’ comp experience and a working command of the guidelines, doing the thing she is expert at.
What she had was the hours to do it in, and a record organized by a platform that highlights the discrepancy in the first place.
The hours saved went back to the clients
“FasterOutcomes frees me up. I’m not landlocked anymore. I get to go fly around and talk to my people. I get to deescalate and connect with my clients. That’s probably one of my most favorite things is that I get to connect.”
Haley Hammond · Lead paralegal, We Care Legal
Injured workers are frightened. They are usually out of work, often behind on rent, and navigating a system nobody explained to them. The person who walks them through it is often the paralegal, on the phone, repeatedly, for months.
That contact is not a soft benefit around the edges of the legal work. It’s how a client survives a claim that takes years, sometimes decades. And it is the first thing that gets squeezed when the record pile has a deadline and the phone call doesn’t.
The question paralegals are actually asking
Everyone in this profession has spent two years hearing that this technology is coming for their job. It’s a fair thing to watch for and it deserves a direct answer.
At We Care Legal, the work that changed was document review — the digging, the date-matching, the manual cross-referencing. The work that grew was the work that requires expertise: knowing the AMA Guides well enough to challenge a rating, judging which conditions are worth fighting to add to a claim, preparing an attorney for a hearing, and sitting with a client who is scared about money and their future.
A paralegal who knows workers’ compensation is not competing with this software. She is the reason it produces anything worth having.
